The war began with the federal legalization of marijuana. Corporations, cartels, and the government fought for crop and distribution rights. These massacres and battles came to be known as the Reefer Wars.

In the southwest the government used biological warfare against a group of anti-reefer dissidents and the Mexican cartels slaughtered thousands of these protesters and eventually detonated a soviet era atomic bomb. The people went underground. They formed a society in the caves led by a man they came to call the Chief.

The Chief, for all of his intentions was affected by the radiation and he became a brutal dictator. He forced the people to tunnel out tombs and places of worship for a new Sun God. He turned men to castratos, children to laborers and forced women to bear his children. The people of the caves revolted. Their war against the chief split them into sects that remain at war beneath the desert.
